ChatGPT Just Met a New Competitor

Just a few weeks ago TikTok met a fierce competitor after news that the TikTok ban was being upheld. Of course, that was very short-lived, but it demonstrated how volatile and ever-changing social media consumers can hop on something new. Similarly, in the world of generative AI, few expected a fresh competitor like DeepSeek to burst onto the scene and rival ChatGPT’s dominance. Almost overnight, DeepSeek emerged as a viable alternative, quickly gaining traction from users and raising questions about the future of conversational AI. But why does this matter?

DeepSeek, much like how Rednote, arose by providing a high quality replacement of their respective competitors. DeepSeek’s sudden rise shows that even seemingly dominant platforms aren’t invincible. Instead of competing directly with ChatGPT on broad, general-purpose tasks, DeepSeek positioned itself as a targeted solution for professionals needing precise, in-depth information—an area ChatGPT had not fully addressed. Much like Rednote emerged when TikTok’s future was uncertain, DeepSeek demonstrates that markets are more vulnerable to disruption than they might appear, as users readily embrace alternatives that better meet their evolving needs.

This means that marketers must remain alert, ready to test new models as they emerge, and react quickly to changing consumer preferences. Consumers, as seen with the Rednote scenario, are quick to seek alternatives when their current go-to option no longer feels sufficient. In the same way, DeepSeek’s emergence reflects a demand for more tailored solutions, pushing both new and established players to innovate and improve. Marketers who embrace these changes early on gain a significant competitive edge, staying ahead of their rivals by adapting to new opportunities faster and more effectively.

In just 3 weeks, we have seen shifts in two big platforms that were dominating their respective digital space. While it’s unclear if DeepSeek will achieve the same level of widespread use as ChatGPT, the parallels to Rednote’s momentary ascent highlight an important trend: people aren’t loyal to platforms so much as they are to the quality and relevance of the experience.
