The Legal Industry is A People Business

“Your legal career will rise or fall based on your relationships.

That’s not something they teach you in law school, but it’s true; most lawyers, when asked, will say most of their new clients come from referrals.

The legal industry is a people business.

Billboards, ads, and SEO all have their place in a well-rounded marketing strategy, but even the law firms with big advertising budgets will admit that the easiest leads to convert find you because of recommendations from other people.

Sometimes this means word of mouth from other attorneys, but it could just as easily be a friend’s brother, a trusted accountant, a doctor who said, “You should talk to them.”

Don’t overlook the potential for referral marketing, because those leads are extremely valuable. Trust travels faster than any marketing campaign ever could. And yet, so many lawyers overlook this.

Every person you meet could be a referral source. The person next to you on a flight. The one you bump into at the grocery store. Your bar association peers. The Chamber of Commerce regulars.

If most of your business comes through referrals, then every interaction matters. This is a people business, and the currency is trust.

So the question is: are you treating everyone like they could help grow your practice?

Because they can — and they might.”
