5 Legal Website Design Tips

Have you ever found yourself scrolling through a website, frustrated by how difficult it is to use? Maybe it doesn’t load quickly enough. Maybe the images are blurry or don’t fit properly on your phone screen. Maybe the navigation makes no sense.

Whatever the reason, it’s frustrating enough to make you want to throw your laptop or phone across the room.

Now, imagine the same happening to one of your customers when they visit your firm’s website. Not a pretty picture, right? It’s even less pretty if you think, “Well…actually…I think my website might have one of these problems. Or several.”

However, there’s no need to worry. Whatever your problem, you can fix it. Whether you’re rehauling your site or starting from scratch, we’ve got some great tips you can use to improve your legal website’s design.

Finally, you can have a website that works for you. Read on to learn more.

1 Make the Website Mobile-Friendly

Everyone and their mother has a mobile phone these days—which they use to engage in a large number of online activities. This is why it’s essential that you make your legal website mobile-friendly. But what does this mean, exactly?

Your website needs to be “mobile responsive.” This is a type of design that allows your website to load as a simpler version of itself on a phone that’s more friendly for scrolling through.

Instead of having to pinch in and out to read content or to move around to see an image in its entirety, visitors will see your website as if it was designed in the first place with a phone in mind. Forms will also be easier to fill out.

People already love scrolling through Facebook and Instagram. So make it easy for them to scroll through your website!

2 Make It Easy to Get in Touch

A beautifully designed website is great and all, but if you make it difficult for customers to get in touch with you, you won’t end up getting any phone calls or emails about the legal services you offer. For this reason, you should make it easy for customers to get in touch.

To do this, simply place your contact information at the top of your homepage. This way, clients won’t have to search through your whole website to find your phone number or email address.

Another tip? Place your social media links either in the header or footer of your website. That way, anyone who wants to connect with you on those platforms can.

3 Provide Clear Navigation

The last thing you want is to give a client a headache. But this is exactly what you’ll be doing if your website is difficult to navigate. Just like with so much in life, with navigation, less is more. Here’s how to do it.

When creating your main navigation menu, limit it to five tabs that are clearly labeled. Then, within each of these tabs, you can provide links to additional pages related to the larger topics.

Don’t forget to make it easy to get back to your homepage on every page, too. This is helpful if a Google search has led your visitor to a page that isn’t your main one.

4 Don’t Clutter Your Pages

Even though it can be tempting to provide a large amount of information and images on your pages, this will actually give the impression of your pages being cluttered. If you’ve ever carried around a legal file that was way too full, you know what we’re talking about.

Too much information will overwhelm your website visitors. If you find that there’s too much of it on one page, simply make two separate pages (for example, having different pages covering a lengthy legal process).

Use headers and images to break up the text, too—and avoid having too many social widgets taking over the pages.

5 Have a Simple Design

For the same reason as above—not wanting to overwhelm your website visitors—you should have a simple website design. Avoid using too many GIFs, colors, and fonts, which will pull focus away from the important content on the website.

Not sure what color palate for fonts to use? Simply incorporate your law firm’s branding in the colors and fonts you do choose to use.

By having a simple design, you’ll also positively impact your website’s load speed and mobile responsiveness, which all have positive impacts on the visitor experience and how high your site ranks in search engine results.
